This column will try to disclose the power electronics (PE) activities in South American countries, namely Argentina, Brazil, Chisle, and Venezuela that interact with IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS). It will also include activities in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Uruguay. This first article, however, will focus only on Brazil’s PE history, which comprises developments based on three areas: industry, utility companies, and academia.
