In my previous column, Buckapalooza—Part I, I talked about how as an independent consultant I often design ac–dc power supplies for lower production volume applications using an off-the-shelf front-end power supply with custom designed dc–dc converters to get the required outputs. This approach saves a lot of time and money in the safety and EMI agency approval process. I then started talking about the issues we face in selecting and procuring good buck converter control ICs. The previous column ended with understanding how the control function, gate driver, and power switches can be integrated into a control IC, the various tradeoffs, and choosing the level of integration right for our design.
