Best Student Branch Chapter

About the Award

The IEEE PELS Best Student Branch Chapter Award recognizes excellent service by PELS Student Branch Chapters (SBC) and Joint SBCs to its members and the power electronics community. As of 2024, this award now recognizes one SBC from each category: Small (6 to 10 members), Medium (11 to 30 members) and Large (30+ members).

Prize:

  • Certificate (in the SBC’s name)
  • Honorarium to support SBC activities (USD 1,000 for large, USD 750 for medium, and USD 500 for small)
  • Reimbursement for necessary conference registration, travel, and accommodation costs incurred to attend the award ceremony. The amount is limited to whatever is lower:
    • USD 1,000 or, if a flight with a flying time over six hours is included, USD 2,000
    • The award honorarium

How to Submit a Nominee

Current SBC Chairs should apply for their SBC to be considered. They will be asked to log into their existing IEEE account (or register for a new one) to identify as a nominator.

Large: IEEE PELS Zhejiang University Student Branch Chapter

IEEE PELS Zhejiang University Student Branch Chapter was established in June 2022, aiming to create a community for graduate student growth and to establish an innovative international academic exchange platform.

With the guidance of Multi-time scale and Multi-objects events design, ZJU-SBC has successfully established 4 major event types: Youth Academic Salon (monthly), Youth Academic Forum (quarterly), Joint Seminar and overseas scholars forum. In addition to these regular events, ZJU-SBC also organized the first SSPEL-Asia in collaboration with other 5 SBCs.  These activities have attracted participants from 20 universities both domestically and internationally, and more than 4,000 attendees.

In terms of publicity, ZJU-SBC utilizes various communication channels, both online and offline, to raise awareness about our events. Additionally, ZJU-SBC have established 2 member groups on social platforms to facilitate communication of ideas among chapter members and promote mutual progress.

Besides, ZJU-SBC won the “Best Operating Organization SBC” award in the PELS SBC competition hosted by IEEE PELS Y&P Committee in 2023, inspiring ZJU-SBC to continue making strides forward.

Overall, The IEEE PELS Zhejiang University Student Branch Chapter is committed to establish an innovative international academic exchange platform.  IEEE PELS Zhejiang University Student Branch Chapter will continue its efforts to organize more meaningful and impactful activities, attract more student members joining IEEE PELS, and encourage students to engage in the power electronics industry.

Small: G.Pulla Reddy Engineering College: Kurnool IEEE Student Branch

IEEE PELS SBC of G.Pulla Reddy Engineering College(Autonomous), Kurnool conducts many activities like technical, administrative, webinars and distinguished lecture programs for the benefit of students. A few among them are:

  1. Dr Kappagantu Ramakrishna delivered a talk on “A ladder to Techno-Professional advancements in Power Engineering”.The speaker also enlightened about the latest benefits for all the PES professional members that includes PES webinars, tech talks, technical videos, conference videos, outreach activities etc which are all free for PES active members.
  2. P.V. Raja Gopal garu, Chief operating officer IEEE India Centre of Excellence, Hyderabad Section, Retd GM, BHEL Power Electronics R & D division delivered a talk on Electric vehicles for eMobility —the Future Battery/Fuel Cell Powered.During this talk the speaker explained about the importance of e-Mobility in our day-to-day life. He also explained the concept used in electric vehicles which plays a key role in the future. 
  3. V. Ananthalakshmi, Associate Professor, EEE Dept, SB Counsellor and PELS SBC faculty Advisor delivered a talk on Personal development skills. During the talk the speaker explained about the skills which are qualities and abilities that help the students grow both personally and professionally. Understanding and improving these skills can help the students maximize their potential. This process is also known as self-development or personal growth.
  4. GPREC in association with PES/PELS/IAS Jt Chapter, IEEE Hyderabad Section, PELS SB Chapters of BVRITW Hyderabad, GPCET Kurnool, GNITS Hyderabad, KLU Guntur conducted a PELS Distinguished Lecturer Programs (DLP)  on – Silicon Carbide Power Conversion Systems for Industrial Applications by Dr. Xu She, Lunar Energy, Mountain View, California and  on Power Electronics for Precision Farming by Dr. Brij N. Singh, Region 4 Manager External Relationships, Emerging Tech. in John Deere & Company, USA.

 

All active PELS SBCs and Joint SBCs are eligible.

Criteria: The criteria are based on the substantial accomplishments of the SBC in fields such as:

  • Chapter meetings with educational, networking, or technical content, such as Distinguished Lectures
  • Local service to PELS members
  • Local support of international PELS conferences
  • Networking with local societies with a similar scope
  • Offering networking opportunities between local industry and academia and/or students and engineers
  • Power electronics-related contributions to IEEE activities, such as establishing IEEE milestones
  • Visibility (e.g., number of members and participants in chapter meetings, gaining new members or supporting elevation of member’s IEEE membership grade, public relations)
